Benny Marotta, Solmar Owner, Talks Traits: How New Generations Can Carry on the Best in Traditions

Benny Marotta is the owner of the Solmar Development Corporation and a prominent figure in his community. Not only has he developed a number of successful residential and commercial properties, but he also helped establish Two Sisters Vineyards, one of the top wineries in Canada. The name refers to his daughters and their hand in his family’s assets. He talks more about what has made his family so successful and why it’s important to foster those traits in young people today.

The Start of Solmar Development

Solmar Development Corporation has built some of the most admired luxury properties in the Greater Toronto area, all thanks to the ingenuity of its owner. Benny Marotta came to Canada from Naples at the age of 18, settling into the town of Vaughan in an effort to stay connected to his Italian roots. He immediately spotted the opportunities available to immigrants and quickly became convinced that this was the ticket to giving his descendants a better future.

It would be easy to discount the accomplishments of important families, particularly for people who aren’t familiar with the day-to-day operations of even the smallest empire. However, it doesn’t take much research to discover just how strong the Marotta family’s commitment has been to their work and the larger community.

Time and Patience, Benny Marotta of Solm on His Most Important Virtues

One thing a budding entrepreneur has to learn is the importance of time and patience. True success in business isn’t one great idea, it’s a lifetime of putting in the work. Only by working through the struggles in everyday decisions can you begin to master the real logistics of leadership.

These are lessons he taught his daughters long before opening Two Sisters Vineyards. Daughters Angela and Melissa say that they were encouraged to see life from a broad perspective. This helped them get a true sense of people and how they made decisions. They were also taught to work hard for what they wanted. Once they had a solid, measurable goal, it became easier to map out a route to get there.

Quality in All Endeavors

Whether it’s the spaghetti sauce at Restaurant 76 or the design of a luxury condo, the reality is that Solmar owner Benny Marotta never compromises the quality that serves as the backbone of his businesses. The Cab Franc, Cab Sauvignon, and Merlot from his family’s vineyards, often served alongside the stunning Italian cuisine of its on-site restaurant, have earned the winery a number of awards, including Best Performing Small Winery in Canada in 2018.

Marotta is the first to say that not every tradition is worth preserving. However, there is a lot to be said for passing down the core qualities that got him where he is today. You can see this not just through his family’s holdings, but also through his philanthropic work. The donations he’s made, particularly to educational facilities like Niagara College, have had a far-reaching impact on the lives of people all over Ontario.
